1) How do you rate the speakers and what metrics are used ?
Here, we strive to provide the most accurate and informative ratings for speakers based on sound quality. To ensure consistency and fairness, we employ a systematic approach utilizes the following metrics, along with user reviews, to find out which speaker is best:
a) Frequency Response
Why it matters:
One crucial metric we consider is the frequency response of the speakers. It indicates the range of audio frequencies a speaker can reproduce. Speakers with a wide frequency response tend to deliver better sound quality, capturing both low and high frequencies with clarity and precision.
How we measure it:
To measure frequency response, we use specialized equipment that generates a range of test tones covering the audible frequency spectrum. We play these test tones through the speakers and record the output. The recorded data is then analyzed to determine the speaker’s frequency response curve, indicating how well it reproduces different frequencies.
b. Distortion Levels
Why it matters:
Distortion can negatively impact the audio quality by introducing unwanted artifacts and altering the original sound. Lower distortion values generally indicate better audio fidelity.
How we measure it:
To assess distortion levels, we use precision audio analyzers that generate a clean audio signal and feed it through the speakers at varying volumes. The output from the speakers is analyzed, and any deviations from the original signal are measured. Lower distortion values indicate better audio fidelity.
c. Sensitivity
Why it matters:
Sensitivity refers to how efficiently a speaker converts electrical power into sound. Higher sensitivity means the speaker can produce louder sound with less power input. We consider sensitivity as an important factor since it affects the overall volume and dynamic range of the speaker.

d. Impedance
Why it matters:
The impedance of a speaker affects its compatibility with amplifiers or audio systems. We analyze the impedance characteristics to provide information on the speaker’s optimal usage and its compatibility with different setups.

e. User Reviews
Why it matters:
While objective metrics play a significant role, we also value user feedback. We incorporate real-world user reviews and experiences to supplement the technical analysis, offering a more comprehensive perspective on the speaker’s performance.
How we measure it:
We access all the different review platforms for each of the products, and aggregate the average review score.
By combining the metrics above systematically, we aim to provide the most comprehensive rating system in Singapore when it comes to speaker quality – in order to help you make an informed decision when selecting a speaker.
5) Are all speakers made equal?
No! Speakers have their similarities but they are not all made the same. Some brands focus on speaker design, others on the highest quality sound, others on cool marketing – but the best of the best focus on all the above, and that’s what we’re looking for.
6) What is the best speaker, all things considered?
In the beginning we had our own hypothesess on which speaker would have the greatest sound. However the results shocked us.
Some popular brands which we thought must make high quality speakers, performed extremely poorly. Whilst some other brands which are less well-known blew our minds and did much better than expected.
So far we have created comprehensive guides for 2 different types of speakers and price categories:
Portable Speakers Below $300
Best Overall Portable Speaker + Sound: Oberhaus Nomad
Lightest / Most Portable Speaker: Harman Kardon Traveller
Home Speakers Below $650
Best Overall Speaker + Sound: Oberhaus Oasis
Best for Voice Assistance (Smart Home): Apple HomePod 2
So far for our 2 product categories & price points, Oberhaus has shown to have phenomenal sound at phenomenal value for money, with fast delivery and a 100% refund policy to boot.
However in the future we will create other guides for other product lines and price points – and we will find other models and brands with phenomenal offerings.
We’ll do the research – so you don’t have to. More coming soon!
